As we all know that Greg Hackney won the first prize of Bass Master Elite in Cayuga Lake Fishing Tournament. He won the competition by using a Strike King Jig which shared the same name with him. How exactly did he fish? Where did he go fishing? I will tell it all to you.

Free Practice
Hackney said that there are grasses at all place by Cayuga Lake; therefore he decided to start fishing from the deep water area. “The free practice was very interesting, I had some bites, but the water condition was not very good to fish, so I moved back to the shoal area and found a pattern that would have a bite.” Hackney said.

“I stayed at the grass area; I noticed there were some basses in the dock. They were following the fish school and swimming away. Most of time I fish in the inner side or outsider of water plants. Outside of which I found deep-water area, the water in the lake had fallen 14-17 feet. Therefore there gathered many fishes. Luckily, I had a bite. What’s more unbelievable, it turned out to be 6 or 7 fishes on my hook!

The First Day

“At the competitive tournament, I got started in the deep-water area and hoped for a big catch, it would be better if I got five and each of them was on average three pounds. By using jigs, I almost got six fishes, but three of them were actually on the hook. Two of them are four pound per fish, and another one was approximately four pound. Having achieved my goal, I hit upon a good idea: why not give a try by the shoal?” Hackney ended up his fishing by catching two big fishes; they were more than ten pound.

From the Second Day to the Fourth Day

“I went back to the deep-water area again at the second day and my boat was also anchored there so that I could be closer to the fish. This time the fish were biting well, two of them were four pound by each and two were five pound by each.” He added, “Having seen the potentiality of this jig, it became my must-need in tackle box. I kept searching for fish in the deep-water area. In a little while I got a bass which was nearly four pound. Then I changed a fishing spot, got another 4 pound, then I was listed 1st of the total weight.”

“Ever since then, I basically kept angling on this method and went toward the deep-water area on the third day. As expected, surely I had four bites, all were big fishes. However, only three of them were successfully on the hook. Nevertheless, I moved to the other area, which was smaller, but it didn’t matter, because I finally got another big one!”
Ha
On the third day, only four fishes had been taken to weigh, because he had been hunting for big fish not five that met the standard of the tournament. Besides, blowing wind made it harder, so there was not any other bite after the fourth one.
“On the fourth day everything went well. Having been put to serious test after for three days, my salt-water-jig couldn’t be more awesome!” “When I tried at the first spot, five fishes were on my hook one after the other and I knew I had won already. However I went to another spots, in every spot could I achieve my goal and kept refreshing my record continually. At last, I won the first prize by total weight of 23 lb. 15 oz.”

The Bait That I Used
The bait that Hackney had used during the whole tournament was the jig of Strike King, one weighted 1oz and the other 1.25 oz. “First of all, I used the 1 oz. one, then in order to catch more and faster, I changed to the 1.25 oz. one. Once a bass bit it, it went down.”
The sky was still dim in the morning; therefore he picked up a light-color jig with shrimp bait on it. After the sun showed up from the cloud, he changed to a blue jig with a green shrimp on it. “The water was so clear that I thought the blue-and-green color combination was very much like the color of river bass and Lepomis macrochirus. What’ more, a tungsten fishing weight would make difference. ” He explained to us.
His fresh-water bait was used once on the first day, it was green pumpkin soft bait. “I usually stay in the grass if go fishing by the shoal area.” He also added.

Tips for Salt-Water bait
“Most of the fish are in the area that half of inch below the grass or by the grass. In the circumstance that the water is clear, if a fish wants to bite your bait, it will be on your hook immediately, so you can roll up your fishing line after few second. Besides, cast your line to a right direction. Fish will not likely swim out of the grass, so I usually cast into a deeper place.”
